Aerostrut: A Modular Electrical Variable Pitch Propulsion System
Copyright © 2021 Robert Dudley Berne. All Rights Reserved, Patent® Pending 2021
Aerostrut is a modular array of variable pitch propeller assemblies, which provides both lift and air braking. This is advantageous for both terrestrial and orbital transportation systems, as it provides increased safety and control to air vehicles that are basically at the mercy of gravity and weather.
Orbital Applications
A Payload-Booster Assembly with 6 Aerostruts
Aerostrut provides a safe and controlled orbital to atmospheric entry for vehicles which rely on reverse landing thrusters. The vehicle’s kinetic energy turns the propellers, which provides a passive braking force while charging the array of lightweight storage cells.
Once sufficient energy is stored, the propellers’ pitch is changed to provide lift. At that point, the system is energized with the stored energy and provides sufficient lift to allow the vehicle to be maneuvered to a safe landing location.
There are multiple advantages for orbital systems:
· Free Energy. Landings are performed with converted braking energy. Not a single drop of fuel is used in the vehicle’s landing. This is less stress on the booster section.
· Doubled Payload Capacity. The booster rocket can now use all of its fuel for orbital effort. This could actually double the payload capacity of an equivalent vehicle without this system.
· Control. Landings are performed in a safe and controlled manner. In the event of adverse conditions, multiple landing attempts can be performed.
· Versatility. The vehicle can land with passengers and returning cargo compartments as one vessel, or have multiple arrays for booster sections and crew cargo.
· Airport Launches. An existing airport can furnish the electrical power, so the payload and booster can be air-lifted to a very high altitude. At that point, the booster is engaged for attaining orbit. This takes advantage of existing airport facilities and further reduces booster fuel requirements. Doubled+Plus Payload Capacity!
·
Safe Launch Aborts. If something goes wrong with the
booster, the vehicle simply goes into flying mode and returns in a safe
controlled manner.
Terrestrial Applications
Aerostrut array vehicles powered by an electrical catenary tower infrastructure can transport passengers and cargo at speeds over 200 mph. It is more economical to maintain and construct than so called light rail and is not as constrained by right-of-way issues. Inter-city high speed transit literally can be located over existing interstate mediums. This can augment existing urban subway and rail systems, as well as service existing ground freight depots and shipyards.
Passenger and Light Cargo Vehicle Fuselage with Aerostruts and Transport Catenary Tower
The biggest advantage this method has over air transportation is something that no bulk air carrier has ever had … Brakes! The going aspect has been well developed, this focuses on the stopping. The ability to stop and hover is a major safety feature for large-scale air transport.
Each tower that supports the catenary has air motion and other sensors which relay environmental conditions and information to enhance smoother and safer movement in even the most difficult conditions.
Consider …
· Electrical rail service without the rail.
· Ground transportation without the ground.
· Airplane speeds without the airplane.
· Lev without the Mag.
· Loop without the Hype
Go Green. Electricity is about 20-25% of the cost of petroleum fuels.
Go Safe. Full maneuvering control.
Go Fast. 200 mph.
Go Big. Expand existing urban transit systems.
Go Home. Existing facilities are easier and faster to access.
